Rebuilding Working Memory
Working memory doesn't recover through rest alone. It recovers through practiced use under low-interruption conditions — essentially, retraining the desk to hold more than one thing at a time without something knocking the papers off.
Externalize before you need to hold it. Every idea you're forcing your mind to keep "live" that could instead be written down is unnecessary load. This isn't a productivity trick — it's direct relief for the exact resource that's been depleted. Write it down, then let your mind actually let go of it.
Practice holding two threads on purpose. Deliberately work on something that requires keeping a plan and a counterpoint in mind simultaneously — a piece of writing with a counterargument, a decision with a competing consideration. Start small. The capacity returns with use, the same way it eroded with disuse.
Protect the moments right after a switch. The few minutes immediately following an interruption are when working memory is most vulnerable to being overwritten entirely. Give yourself a genuine buffer — even sixty seconds — before diving into the next task, rather than switching directly from one demand to the next.
Reversing Shallow Processing
Shallow processing isn't fixed by reading more slowly. It's fixed by reducing the fragmentation that made depth impossible in the first place, and then deliberately practicing depth again.
Read in blocks that match your actual current capacity — not your old one. If sustained attention has eroded to eight minutes, don't force forty. Read for eight, stop, let the material settle, then continue. Forcing past the current capacity usually just produces more shallow processing, not less.
Summarize without looking. After reading a section, close it and explain what it said, in your own words, before moving on. This single step does more to reverse shallow processing than almost anything else, because it forces the depth of processing that skimming was designed to avoid.
Reduce the pre-fragmentation. Shallow processing often starts before you even open the material — arriving already split three ways from whatever you were doing a moment earlier. A short buffer before starting anything that requires depth gives the mind time to actually arrive, rather than starting already divided.
Restoring Decision-Making Capacity
Decision fatigue accelerates when the same limited resource is spent on dozens of trivial choices before the important ones arrive. Restoring this capacity means protecting it earlier in the day, not trying to power through once it's already gone.
Reduce trivial decisions, not important ones. Standing decisions — what to wear, what to eat, when to check messages — cost the same decision-making resource as harder choices. Pre-deciding the trivial ones, even loosely, preserves capacity for what actually needs judgment.
Sequence hard decisions earlier. If decision fatigue reliably sets in by a certain point in the day, that's useful data. Move the choices that matter most ahead of that point, rather than after it.
Notice avoidance as a symptom, not a character flaw. Decisions that keep getting put off are often not being avoided out of laziness — they're being avoided because the resource needed to make them well has already been spent elsewhere. Treating this as information, rather than a discipline failure, changes what the actual fix looks like.

None of this restores cognitive capacity overnight. Working memory, depth of processing, and decision-making reserve were worn down over years of constant micro-withdrawal, and they return the same way — gradually, through repeated, deliberate practice under conditions that actually allow the capacity to rebuild.
The failures that show up as "I can't finish a thought anymore" were never a personal deficiency. They were the predictable output of an environment designed to fragment faster than any single mind could defend against alone. Repair is possible. It's just slower, and more specific, than most advice admits.
